The kids and I signed up for a herptile search led by a volunteer, amateur naturalist. Amateur indeed! He may not get paid for being a naturalist, but this guy is no novice. He knows what he's talking about. We turned over logs (carefully replacing each of them afterwards) and helped him find ten salamanders. All of the ones we found were red-backed salamanders. The data collected will go into the Maryland Amphibian and Reptile Atlas (MARA).
