Sugar

My wife went to eat lunch with Bailey at school today. She said that he got strawberry milk, which is an option every day at our kids' school. She read the ingredients: water, high fructose corn syrup, powdered milk, strawberry flavor.

When I was a kid we never got strawberry milk at school and we got chocolate milk maybe a couple times a year.

The thing that I wonder, and I've been wondering about this for a while, is: who was it, between my generation and my kids' generation, that decided kids aren't getting enough sugar in their diets and thought it a good idea to feed them strawberry milk every day?

It must have been somone in my class in 5th grade, because there was a rumor going around that our drinking fountain was going to filled with root beer instead of water (and we all believed it)! Thank goodness it was just a rumor.
By the time I was in high school, we could choose between white milk, chocolat milk, and "orange juice" every day. Sadly, the orange juice was Tampico punch, which is mostly high fructose corn syrup. Yuck!

By the time our grandkids are in school maybe they'll just give them a big bottle of high fructose corn syrup for lunch.
